Our story began in 2008 when Corporación América Airports, CAAP, won the Ecuadorian government's bid to build and operate an environmentally friendly airport in the Galapagos Islands.
To achieve this, we set ambitious goals and envisioned the construction of a 100% sustainable building that would contribute to maintain the Galapagos Islands as a World Heritage Site. We decided to take advantage of the island's lighting, temperature, and wind conditions, adapting the construction to make the most of nature.
We have responsibly complied the environmental norms required by the Ministry of the Environment of Ecuador and the Galapagos National Park, from construction to current operation. Not settling for this, we have pushed ourselves even further, until we became a worldwide airport benchmark.
We are the World's First Ecological Airport, something that has been recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council by granting us the LEED GOLD level certification. This award was bestowed on us for our design and construction aimed at optimizing the use of energy, lighting, water consumption and the use of ecological and recycled materials.
In addition, we are the First Airport in Latin America and the Caribbean to obtain the "Carbon Neutral" certificate granted by the Airports Council International (ACI), through its Airport Carbon Accreditation program. This means that the airport manages, reduces and offsets all carbon emissions generated by our operations.
These achievements are particularly noteworthy because they have been attained in an ecological sanctuary such as the Galapagos Islands.
